American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada Working to Correct Sex Education Information in Local Schools
Organization states many items are inaccurate, outdated, misleading and biased
LAS VEGAS – American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLUNV) distributed multiple documents to the Clark County School District (CCSD) Board in attempt to correct the messages being pushed regarding sex education.
Earlier this year, the ACLUNV conducted a review of materials being used in sexual education courses at CCSD schools. The ACLUNV discovered that approved materials were rife with inaccurate, outdated, misleading and biased information. On May 11, 2015, the ACLUNV presented this information to the CCSD Sex Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) and also sent the review to each of the CCSD Board of Trustees.
Subsequent to this review, CCSD removed six of the eight materials the ACLUNV pointed to as containing inaccurate, outdated, misleading and biased information. To date, CCSD does not appear to have a policy in place to periodically review materials and the approved materials list still contains erroneous, misleading and biased materials.
“CCSD’s refusal to provide students with factual, unbiased, and critically important, lifelong information defies the very purpose of education. Students know exactly what they have or have not been taught, what they know, and what they need to know,” said Tod Story, executive director of ACLUNV.
