Former U.S. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley Named
Civil Libertarian of the Year by ACLU of Nevada

Award to be presented at the 13th Annual Celebration of Civil Liberties Dinner

LAS VEGAS, NV – The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada is pleased to announce that former United States Congresswoman Shelley Berkley has been chosen to receive the 2015 Emilie Wanderer Civil Libertarian of the Year award. She was the first woman to serve in Nevada’s First Congressional District, which she held for seven terms. Berkley has a strong record of defending and advancing civil rights for the three decades she served in Congress. Berkley now serves as CEO and Senior Provost, for Touro University’s Nevada and California campuses.

The ACLU of Nevada will present Berkley with the Civil Libertarian of the Year award at its Thirteenth Annual Celebration of Civil Liberties on Friday, June 26, 2015, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Panevino Ristorante.

“In Shelley’s work in Congress, and throughout her public service career, she has always been a voice for the voiceless, tirelessly defending democracy, and promoting equality for all,” said Robert Chester, ACLU of Nevada Board President. “We are delighted to honor Shelley Berkley as our 2015 Civil Libertarian of the Year”

The ACLU of Nevada’s Emilie Wanderer Civil Libertarian of the Year award is given to individuals who have significantly contributed to the protection and advancement of civil liberties in Nevada. It is named in honor of Emilie Wanderer, one of Las Vegas’ first female attorneys and a long-time civil rights advocate.
